The issue about Syria is not Assad

Sako Sefiani - 10 Oct 2016

When I post something on Syria, criticizing US and its allies’ intervention on the side of foreign terrorists, who are trying to overthrow the government, some ask me sarcastically: "do you like Assad?" This is very telling about the incredibly arrogant and depraved mindset of many Americans who, after decades of US interventions and regime changes, have completely lost the concept of sovereignty, independence and non-intervention. The issue about Syria is not what we think or feel about it. The issue is US intervention for regime change, which is against all international laws and norms and which now threatens the world with another world war.

Having said that, I would remind those who keep calling President Assad a "dictator" and hence join the imperialist choir preaching regime change there through war, that Syria held a presidential election on 3 June 2014, which as a result, kept President Assad in office. Now, I know what the response will be to this: that the elections there are rigged and don't reflect the attitude of the Syrian people. But, here is a fact that was only mentioned by the Guardian, among all the Western media. As reported by the Guardian, on 17 January, 2012, "Qatar's royal family, which has taken one of the most hawkish lines against Assad – the emir has just called for Arab troops to intervene", funded a poll in Syria, presumably, to show that President Assad did not enjoy the support of his people, only to find that, contrary to their expectations, "Some 55% of Syrians want Assad to stay". The results of the poll were published on the web site of the Doha Debates that conducted the poll and was printed by the Guardian in that same article, mentioned above. But, Western media, except for the Guardian, ignored this finding.

In the same article, the Guardian adds some context: "Remember Ronald Reagan's support for the Contras, whom he armed and trained to try to topple Nicaragua's Sandinistas from bases in Honduras? For Honduras read Turkey, the safe haven where the so-called Free Syrian Army has set up".

In an article written also in 2012, Philip Giraldi, a former CIA officer who now writes for the American Conservative – "a magazine that criticises the American military-industrial complex from a non-neocon position on the lines of Ron Paul", writes: "Turkey, a Nato member, has become Washington's proxy and that unmarked NATO warplanes have been arriving at Iskenderum, near the Syrian border, delivering Libyan volunteers and weapons seized from the late Muammar Gaddafi's arsenal". The US and its allies are thus using one regime change as stepping stone for the next. "French and British special forces and trainers are on the ground," he writes, "assisting the Syrian rebels, while the CIA and US Spec Ops are providing communications equipment and intelligence to assist the rebel cause, enabling the fighters to avoid concentrations of Syrian soldiers …"

But, these facts are ignored by US and most Western media because they don't coincide or support their agenda for achieving a complete world domination for Western corporations. Sadly, even some self-proclaimed "socialists", "leftists" and "revolutionaries" have added their voice to the criminal and dangerous interventionist policy that US imperialism has been pursuing for world domination, which tries and installs compliant governments that would take orders from Washington, which ultimately strengthens and benefits multinational corporations. I'm completely at loss as to how this helps their purported cause of "socialism" or "revolution".
